Triathlon history… in a nutshell: After moving back to Des Moines from Bozeman, Montana in 2000, I began jogging to shed the beer weight I had accrued over my college years. That jogging soon led to my first 5K, then a 10K, 20K, 1/2 marathon, marathon and even an ultra. Being an active runner, I was exposed to triathlon and the lore of it, drew me in. I somehow trained and completed my first triathlon (olympic) in 2002 and was hooked. That next year, I signed up for every triathlon I could afford within driving distance. Pigman, Take Me Back Tri, Quad City Tri, Okoboji Tri, Cornman, Big Creek… you name it and I was racing. After approximately 2 years of local triathlons, I went for a 1/2 Ironman followed by the Chicago marathon 1 month later. I did them both with some personal success, but ended up injuring my right knee in the process. The next 3 years we’re much more mild in both training and actual triathlons. I spent a lot of time trying to recover from my knee injury. In the process, I developed several other injuries including a hip flexor issues, ITB a bit of tendonitis in my other knee. Fast forward to last year (2008), I had my first successful season without pain or injury. I also managed to break my PR for olympic distance! Now, in 2009, I’m having the best and strongest season yet…. and there is plenty yet to unfold!
